D.B. Wood Road Cut

The D.B. Wood road cut is located about 1/2 mile south of the Route 29 intersection on the west side of the road. The rock here is the the water aquifer layer of the Edwards Limestone of early Cretaceous age (135 million years ago) in the rain water recharge zone. The light colored layers are thought to be Rudist reef debris mounds formed by wave, tide, and storm action in a shallow, tropical sea. Darker colored, iron stained layers may be inter-mound layers of reef debris. Rudists are "Coke Bottle" shaped Cretaceous age reef building bi-valve shell fish that weather out leaving circular holes in the rock, some as small as an inch or two in diameter while others are as large as six or more inches in diameter.
